FAQ

Q: Who is this workshop for?

A: This training workshop is designed for researchers who use paleoclimate reconstructions to inform some aspect of their research. Participants should come with at least some understanding of the general concepts of paleoclimatology and paleoclimate reconstructions, but do not need to have any experience creating paleoclimate reconstructions. Participants from paleoclimate-adjacent fields, including paleoecology, history, paleontology, archeology and many more are especially encouraged to apply.

Q: What is the format?

A: The workshop is in person and will run for 3 days (June 2-4 2026), during which we will alternate between lectures, directed activities and personal study/research time. Collaboration will be encouraged at every level, and we will select attendees with a mix of interests/expertise to maximize intellectual cross-pollination. Participants will present on their research progress on the last day.

Q: Do I need to know Python/R to attend this hackathon?

A: No! You can do a lot with PReSto without coding at all, although you can do more with code.

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: Energy, enthusiasm and some ideas for tinkering with paleoclimate reconstructions. A background in paleoclimate and reconstruction techniques (although not necessarily both) will be helpful too.

Q: What are the technical requirements?

A: You will need a laptop that can accesss the internet.

Q: How do I register for the workshop?

A: Please fill out this form by February 10th 2026.

Q: Will I be working alone?

A: Sometimes, and sometimes in teams.

Q: What will I get out of this?

A: You will learn how to use the PReSto platform to access, explore and modify paleoclimate reconstructions, as well as techniques to making your research (whatever it is) reproducible in the long run.

Q: I am in a Master program and I am not planning to apply to a PhD, is this for me?

A: Yes! You will be able to reuse what your learn in this workshop outside an academic career.

Q: I would love to attend but have previous committments. Is there a way for me to participate?

A: The lectures will be released asynchronously and you can always use, learn and explore the PReSto platform on your own.

Q: OK, I’m sold. What happens next?

A: Once you have registered, the organizers will review applications and expect to make decisions by late-February. If you are selected, we’ll be in touch.
